What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API (also known as the WhatsApp Business Account - WABA) is a developer-focused connection point built by Meta. It does not have an official mobile app. Instead, it exposes a secure JSON API that allows platforms like AutomateIt to send and receive messages on your behalf.
Because it connects directly to Meta's cloud datacenters:
- It operates independently of a physical cell phone. Once set up, your phone does not need to be turned on or connected to the internet for the chatbot to reply.
- It supports rich message templates with interactive elements like Quick Reply buttons, Call-to-Action URL triggers, and lists.
Conversations & Billing Model
Unlike standard SMS or old-school WhatsApp bots that charge per message, Meta bills WhatsApp API usage based on 24-hour conversation sessions.
Conversation Categories:
- Utility Conversations (Service-Initiated): Business-initiated messages related to transactions, shipping notifications, or order updates.
- Marketing Conversations (Business-Initiated): Promotions, coupons, or newsletter updates.
- Service Conversations (User-Initiated): Any support interaction started by a customer query. The business gets a 24-hour window to chat for free, billing only for that 24-hour session.
[!NOTE] Every WhatsApp Business Account receives 1,000 free User-Initiated (Service) conversations per month. AutomateIt passes these free tiers directly to you with zero markup.
